Tuesday, November 17: QED: An Extensible, Structured Framework for Explainable Question Answering

Michael Collins, Matthew Lamm, Chris Alberti, Daniel Andor

A question answering system that in addition to providing an answer provides an explanation of the reasoning that leads to that answer has potential advantages in terms of debuggability, extensibility and trust. To this end, QED is a question answering system that in addition to providing an answer provides an explanation of the reasoning that leads to that answer. A QED explanation specifies the relationship between a question and answer according to formal semantic notions such as referential equality, sentencehood, and entailment. Wednesday, November 18: The Language Interpretability Tool (LIT)

Ian Tenney, James Wexler

The Language Interpretability Tool (LIT) is a visual, interactive model-understanding tool for NLP. LIT is built to answer core questions about model behavior: Why did my model make this prediction? When does it perform poorly? What happens under a controlled change in the input? LIT is aimed at both researchers and practitioners, and supports a wide range of workflows including local explanations, aggregate analysis, and interactive exploration of counterfactual inputs.
