Change the temperature on a Nest thermostat

Manually adjust your thermostat’s temperature in the app or directly on the thermostat.

Home app

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Favorites or Devices .
  3. Select your thermostat.
  4. Your thermostat must be set to Heat, Cool, or Heat • Cool mode to change its temperature. To change the mode, tap Temperature mode Heat Cool mode and select the one you want.
  5. From here, you can manually adjust the temperature two different ways:

    • Tap and drag the dial clockwise or counter-clockwise to increase or decrease the temperature
    • Tap + or to increase or decrease the temperature 1° at a time.

Tip: Look for the Nest Leaf Leaf when adjusting the temperature. When it appears, you’ll know that you’ve set a temperature that can help save energy.

Note: When you manually adjust the temperature, the temperature will stick until the next scheduled temperature change. If you don’t want the temperature to change by that point, but don’t want to change or remove your temperature schedule, you can hold the temperature.

Temperature presets

Note: Temperature presets work with the Nest Thermostat in the Home app and are not available for the Nest Thermostat E or Nest Learning Thermostat.

With a temperature preset, you can easily set a specific temperature that you repeatedly use a bit faster than manually adjusting the temperature dial.

  • Use ready-made presets like Comfort, Eco, and Sleep as soon as you add your thermostat in the Home app.
  • Create custom presets. This is helpful for other times you might like a specific temperature that’s not included in your thermostat’s existing presets, like when you’re working out and want a cooler home or have a guest that likes warmer temperatures than you’re used to.
