Is the data migration service right for my organization?

If your migration is complex or you need detailed logs, the data migration service might not be right for your organization. To compare migration products, go to the Google Workspace migration product matrix.

There are several points to consider before using the data migration service.

How many users you want to migrate

In most cases, the data migration service works best when migrating a group of 100 users or fewer. You can migrate more users at once, but you might see a drop in performance.

Your source account setup

Your source account must:

  • Have a TLS certificate. A third-party root certificate authority must sign and trust the certificate. A self-signed certificate is not sufficient. For more information, go to Set up your TLS certificate.
  • Be correctly set up before you begin migrating. The steps depend on where you’re migrating from. For details, go to Prepare your source account.

In a single migration, you can migrate email, contacts, or calendars, but you can't migrate 2 or more of them at the same time. Migrate them separately.

If your Google Workspace edition is Essentials, you can only migrate calendar data and contacts. You can't migrate email.
