Google Nest Mini Sleep command

JohnMcGeough
Community Member

Up until the last couple of days I could instruct my mini nest to “sleep in 20 minutes” and 20 minutes later is would stop. But now it although it acknowledges the command, it keeps on playing after the time period. I have tried saying “stop in 20 minutes”  as well as specifying an actual time, but all to no avail. I have two speakers, and they both are doing the same.
Does anyone know what has changed?

Here’s what support is saying

We have been made aware of reported issues with the Sleep Timer. We’re looking into possible solutions. For the meantime, we would like you to send a feedback about this issue with the steps provided below.

1. Turn on device usage data and crash reports:

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Select the device card to share feedback about.
  • At the top-right, select Settings and then Recognition and sharing.
  • Turn on Send [device model] device usage and crash reports to Google. (Example: Send Google Home device usage and crash reports to Google.)
    • Note: For iOS devices, turn on Send device usage and crash reports.

2. Reproduce the issue (Try setting a sleep timer). After the issue occurred, send feedback from the speaker device via voice command (OK Google, send feedback) then say the keywords "GHT3 sleep timer not working".

The same thing is happening for my Google Home mini. I say "stop playing in 5 minutes". It responds with "speaker will stop playing in 5 minutes" but nothing happens, the radio station I'm playing keeps playing. Super annoying when I'm trying to fall asleep.

I've factory reset the device and re-set it up, also deleted any routines it may get confused with. Sleep timer still not working. Please advise. Thanks.

Same here. For the last couple of years I've listened to LBC before I go to sleep and I set a timer to turn off LBC in 20 minutes.

That now doesn't happen and it continues playing all night.

Driving me mad as there doesn't appear that anyone has found a solution

I just tried playing LBC on a different device a Google Nest Mini.  Also tried playing a song on spotify.  In both cases sleep timer not turning off audio.  This used to work. Suspect Google has changed something.

Yes, happening for me also. Worked fine until two or three days ago.

Maybe if everyone contacts google support, they will do something about it. They already escalated my reported problem... 😉

Starting about 5 days ago the sleep timer function on my two Lenovo smart clocks do not work. I say to the clocks play music for 30 minutes. The clock responds that it will play the music for 30 minutes and then shut off. The music starts but it does not turn off at 30 minutes. I have to ask Google to stop music. I have tried several different word phrases and each time it says it will stop in 30 minutes but it does not. Does anyone have a suggestion of how to correct this or is this a software issue. Thank you

My sleep timer (to shutdown music or background sounds) suddenly stopped working. It just keeps playing.

I have restarted my device a couple of time and also reset it to factory settings, and the problem is not yet resolved.

Any advice?

Having the same problem on all 3 devices.

Same here!

Same problem here. All of my various makes and models of the google display, home hub, nest audio devices have the same issue.

Hi folks,

I know it hasn't been easy for you especially when the sleep timer feature has been very useful for your daily schedule. It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first to refresh the link between your devices and your Wi-Fi. Unplug the power cord from your router followed by your Nest speakers and plug them back in starting with your router. Restarting the phone where your Google Home app should also do it.

Keep us posted.

Dan

Hello,

How can I set a sleeptimer for a Google Nest / Home which is playing music (YouTube music). I want so set this timer outgoing from a different nest / home device or from a Android mobile via Google Home App.

As example - in the kid's room audio is playing from a nest device and I want to set the sleeptimer via the Nest device in the kitchen or via my mobile phone for 30 minutes.

... How can I do that?

I have a number of Google speakers and three Nest Hub Displays.

When I ask any of them to sleep in X minutes they do not shut off.

I have tried:

Hey google, play X for 20 minutes

Hey google play X.....after media starts playing, hey google sleep in 20 min.

Hey google play X....after media starts playing, hey google set a sleep timer for 20 minutes

Each time I get an acknowledgement, X speaker will turn of in 20 minutes, but it never does.

I have tested this on all seven of my various speakers including after recycling power.

Please help.

HI @irritatedpaddy

Unfortunately timer delays such as this stopped working on all google nest devices about 2 or 3 weeks ago, possibly after the recent firmware update. It has been reported hundreds of times, many threads about it, and google say they are aware and a fix is awaited in the future at some date.

Hi folks,

@Kadven, thanks for the help.

@irritatedpaddy, our team is aware about timers/sleep timers that aren’t working for turning off music at the specified time and are still working on a fix. For news and updates about sleep timers, keep an eye on the recommended answer on the main thread. If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to start a new one for I will be locking this thread after 24 hours.

Best,

Dan

Why oh why does this have to take so awfully long?

If the option disappeared after an update, Google can go back to a previous version and take all the time in their world to solve this nasty problem.

Hi folks,

@Cathal_S, thanks for the help.

@Iced, Cathal_S is correct. Just to add to what he said, setting up a sleep timer to one of your Nest speakers using a different speaker will not work. It will only work on the specific device that you gave command to. You can send feedback about it using your Google Home app or your Nest speakers.

Best,

Dan

Hi Iced,

We haven't heard from you in a while so we'll be locking this thread if there is no update within 24 hours. If you need assistance or want to discuss topics, feel free to start a new thread.

Thanks,

Dan

It would be so very nice if all of you would stop merging 24/7 and fix the issue. The reason there are so many threads is this is a HUGE issue by 1000s of people and NONE of you give a F**K about it.

I couldn't have put this any better myself!

I think I am the one that caused them now to automatically sensor my real words cuz I am typing the REAL word and promptly would get an auto response to refrain from using it. They really got that down but are still working on fixing things.

Why not have the assistant say that sleep timers are no longer supported. Their removal is causing trouble for many people - often at night causing sleep issues, then wasting time trying to resolve the issue when in reality this is Google's fault. At least having the assistant give a warning that you have removed the sleep timer function, rather than telling the customer the sleep timer is set, will allow the customer to decide not to rely on or trust their broken google device.

808IUFan

Well that is where the issue is. If they were not supported, the page where you choose sleep sounds in the Bedtime routine (new name is automation) would not say the sound would automatically stop. The support people saying it was removed are wrong. Keep in mind they do not work for Google, they are just regular people who have been around awhile and they just make stuff up.

This is a community forum supported by other users like myself and community specialist's.

I have some forum hygiene privileges and the ability to flag issues with the Google Nest team. I've done this and someone higher up should see this and investigate further.

Thank you for your thank you 😁

Hopefully this is resolved very soon.

Hi folks,

@Cathal_S, thanks for the help.

I know the feeling of things not working as it should, let me help you out on this. It would help a lot if we could do a sequential reboot first by unplugging the power cord of our router followed by your Nest devices. Restarting your phone might also help.

Next would be to cancel the sleep timer by saying “Hey, Google! Cancel the sleep timer”. Recreate another sleep timer and this time the command should involve the exact time to stop. Say “Hey, Google! Stop playing at <time>” or you could also say "Hey, Google! Play music, artist, genre or playlist until <time>"

For more info, kindly check out this guide.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Dan

Thanks for the help, I’ve followed your instructions and it does not work.

Also done a cold boot of my Google device and mobile device and this issue remains for me.

Cathal
